When you open multiple pages in your browser, it consumes memory, takes up your processor, and can slow down your browsing. With the Auto Tab Discard extension, you can automatically suspend tabs that are not in use and free up memory. You just have to reload them when you need them.

  1. Go to the Auto Tab Discard card in Chrome’s application library.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Click Add Extension.
  4. Right-click on the new extension icon that appears in the toolbar and clicks Options
  5. By default, tabs are put to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity when there are more than 6 inactive tabs. You can customize this interval and trigger threshold.
  6. To never put a page to sleep, when you’re on it, click the extension icon and check the Add this website to the whitelist box.
  7. The extension then automatically puts tabs that you are not using to sleep. Just click on a hanging tab to reload it. You will notice in passing that the suspended tabs have a small gray icon.

To never suspend a tab or website, open it, click the extension icon in the toolbar, and click Always next to Keep tabs for this site to whitelist this site Web. All tabs on this site will never be suspended. By clicking on Session you will limit this setting to the current session which ends when you close the browser. Finally, to avoid suspending the current tab without whitelisting the site, check the Keep tab for this session check box.
